The story
What if the mermaid stories we grew up with came with a darker side?
I'm excited to share THE FISSURE, an original supernatural drama series I've been developing that reimagines mermaid mythology for an adult audience. Set in Holloway Harbor, a wealthy Northern California coastal town divided between old-money families and the locals who keep their world running, the series begins on what should be an ordinary high school graduation night. Instead, an earthquake tears open an impossible fissure in the harbor, and five young adults find themselves connected to something far beyond their understanding.
Eighteen-year-old Milo Reach, ten months sober, disappears beneath the water and returns alive against all odds. His older sister Diesel, who has spent years trying to protect him, and their friends soon discover that they've all been changed. Water transforms their bodies, their wounds heal in ways they can't explain, and a mysterious hum from the depths begins calling to them. As government agencies close in to investigate the fissure, the group must navigate a secret that could cost them their freedom — while confronting whatever is waiting below.
But THE FISSURE is about much more than mermaids.
It’s a story about transformation, and how rarely we get to choose what that looks like. It's about addiction and recovery, the weight of family responsibility, the secrets people carry, and the systems that allow some people to escape consequences while others pay the price. The supernatural elements may be extraordinary, but the emotions driving the story are deeply human.
I wanted to create a series that speaks to the generation that grew up loving mermaid stories, but is now old enough to understand that transformation isn't always magical or beautiful. Sometimes it's painful. Sometimes it changes everything. And sometimes, the thing you're most afraid of becoming is the thing that finally forces you to face who you've always been.
Planned as a five-season story, THE FISSURE is built around a larger mystery that unfolds over time, with character arcs, buried histories, and revelations designed to connect across the series. Beneath the suspense and mythology is one central question: when the world changes you in ways you never asked for, what do you choose to become?
